Rachel Williams talks about her love for Calendly, leading a sales team and her miniature zoo

Get to know the life of a female leader in tech.

As the Director of Sales here at Calendly, Rachel demos and sells to our large teams. One of the fun things about sales at Calendly is that there isn’t really a typical day or week, which keeps it interesting.

Rachel spends a good deal of her time on calls and web conferences with customers doing everything from consulting teams on how they can use Calendly, to providing customized demonstrations. Most days, each sales team member has about four to five scheduled calls and the rest of the time is spent answering emails and coordinating new customers to easily transfer to our onboarding process.

Rachel leads the team by keeping an eye on monthly, quarterly and annual targets and laying out the game plan to ensure the whole team meets or exceeds quota. Rachel shares what it’s like to be a part of sales in the SaaS industry.

What do you find rewarding in your career?    

I love what I do and I’m really proud of the progress I’ve made through the years. What makes me most proud over any other accolades is when I can mentor someone and help them grow in their career. There is nothing more rewarding than pouring myself into someone eager to learn and being a part of their career’s story.         

How did you get into sales?

I always wanted to be in sales because I love talking with people and helping solve problems. I stumbled into software sales years ago and have climbed my way up slowly but surely.

What do you think it takes to be successful at Calendly?

Calendly is a fast moving, ever-evolving company that is run by a team of people who are very passionate about helping the company grow. To be successful here, you need to be agile and enjoy the challenge of always growing—both in your own professional skills and stretching with the company’s growth. It also helps to have a true passion for enjoying life to the fullest, especially when it comes to food and pets!

Who is someone that inspires you?

My dad—there is no one I admire more. He is a self-made man. He was a first-generation college graduate, paid his entire way through college and medical school, had an incredible career and made countless sacrifices to give his family the opportunities he never had. He taught me the value of working hard and chasing my dreams—a true hero.

Do you have any hidden talents that you’d like to share with us?

I should have been a detective. Nothing slips by me. [Editor’s Note: It’s true.]

What advice would you give to someone applying for a job in your department?

Be humble and confident. I look for sales reps that have the experience to help them be successful, but the humility to know that they still have room to grow and improve.

What’s your favorite Atlanta neighborhood?

Oh man, this is a hard one for me. I love Inman Park for the obvious reasons – the food, culture, proximity to the BeltLine… I could go on for forever. I hate admitting this, but I’m the literal embodiment of the State Farm “Never” commercial. We packed up our Grant Park cottage and moved to the “burbs” with our mom car and a little one on the way. But Inman Park still has my heart. 

How do you get to work?

Since I’m an “OTP girl,” I drive in.

These are a few of my favorite things

My little miniature zoo at our house. We have three dogs and a cat and they are family. Don’t tell the others, but my 13.5 year old YorkiPoo, Madison, is the greatest of all time!

Charleston—I got married there and one day hope to retire there. I need to sell a lot of deals to make that dream happen!

Cleaning and organizing. I know it sounds boring, but it makes me so happy!

What are you bingeing right now?

I am a big Instagram stalker—mostly with bloggers and interior designers.

Tell us a fun fact about one of your coworkers that we might not know!

Chris Tortorello, an account executive on my team, is a gifted artist. He once casually showed us a picture he drew of someone and it was amazing!

Why do you choose to work at Calendly?

I believed in the product, first and foremost. When interviewing at Calendly, I saw the passion in everyone’s eyes and I felt like I finally found a company I could dig my feet into and call home. Looking back on my decision to join Calendly, I’m so glad I did. It’s the only place I’ve worked where I truly feel appreciated and that my work matters and helps move the needle of progress for the business.
