Meet Radhika Solanki, the lead quality assurance (QA) tester here at Calendly! She works on a cross-functional team to test new, upcoming features before they are deployed to our users. A typical work week for her consists of testing pull requests created by developers, running new product changes through a series of testing with other QAs, meeting with the team about improvements to our process and how we test, as well as creating documentation and notes. Radhika shares what it’s like to be a unique part of the Calendly team.
How did you get into your line of work?
I used to be a technical recruiter for IT staffing firms and found myself spending more time talking about new and exciting technology. I never thought about going the IT route, but interacting with people who are passionate about what they do was enticing. I decided to take a risk to switch careers and ended up falling in love with the role of QA. It was pretty tough working a full-time job, studying for my software testing certification (ISTQB) and freelancing in order for me to move from one path to the next, but I was very lucky to have the support of my family.
What are you most proud of with regards to your career?
I have had the opportunity to learn so many new techniques, processes and methodologies working with Calendly in its startup phase. Because we get to “wear many hats,” I have been extremely lucky to test our application end-to-end and learn more about technology and how it interacts with one another.
What advice would you give to someone applying for a job in the QA department at Calendly?
Be hungry to learn. There are so many things that you can teach yourself if you are open to it. At Calendly, we are always growing and trying to create a more refined process. If you are eager to dive right in and prove yourself by understanding the application and being open to learning different methods, you can put yourself on a path to success.
I think being independent and passionate about what you do is very important to earning success here. Working at a startup gives you the opportunity to own a piece of creating an amazing company. There’s no manual on how to be the best in your job; that is solely up to you and your ability to adapt and soak up as much information as you can. Be willing to learn because we all have something to gain from listening to others.
Who is someone that inspires you?
My parents inspire me every day to be a better person and focus on the important things in life. I admire and respect them so much for their kindness, strength, work ethic, dedication and complete compassion for those around them.
They taught me to be humble and to take pride in everything that I do. Both of my parents came to America without a security net, but they made life work. They never complained about hard times to us as children, but always made us feel like we had it all. Both of them taught us that if we work hard and are kind to people, we can live the dream and focus on things that make us happy.
They took a risk for us to have a better life and pushed us to break barriers in order to make a difference and help others. I can only hope that we live up to that potential.
What are words you try to live by? Or the best piece of advice you’ve ever gotten?
Be humble, and let your work speak for itself.
What’s your favorite Atlanta neighborhood?
I love Midtown because there is always an adventure around at the next corner. Besides being the site of Calendly HQ, there are so many things to do and places to eat that it feels overwhelming at times. I never feel bored and the people here are genuinely amazing.
These are a few of my favorite things…
I love to travel with my (twin) sister and family. Last year we went to Australia for two weeks and it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. I held a Koala, fed and pet baby kangaroos, hiked on numerous trails with gorgeous waterfalls, watched an opera at the Sydney Opera House, and hung out at the local bars and restaurants. Now we’re planning a trip to explore somewhere new this year. I love having adventures with my partner in crime. It doesn’t get any better than that!
I love trying out new restaurants. I’m a bit of a picky eater but my close friends and I are trying to explore different cuisines instead of going to the same places. Going out and eating Korean BBQ, Shabu-shabu and Malaysian food has been exciting. Food has always been a way of showing love in my family, so this gives me a chance to continue to learn about different cultures in the best way possible.
I love to go on different hiking trails and have an adventure with my friends. There is always something calming and serene about being in nature and focusing your energy on the positive things around you.
What’s your favorite Slack emoji?
Keanu emoji. Hands down. I have an unhealthy obsession with him. He just seems like a guy that you could grab a beer and have deep conversations with and you would leave happy.
Finish this sentence: One weird thing about me that most people don’t know is…
I am extremely silly and will break out into song and dance just to make people laugh. My dream job is to be a backup singer and dancer for an 80’s rock band (very specific—I know), but I am a horrible singer and dancer so I don’t know if anyone will be knocking on my door anytime soon.
Why do you choose to work at Calendly?
I choose to work at Calendly because I see the potential for greatness—making a bigger impact on the whole application and our users. I’m very lucky to have the responsibility of making sure that we deliver quality features, and I definitely don’t take it for granted. Knowing that I helped create an awesome product for our users is so satisfying.
I get to work with some of the most passionate and talented people in the business. I continuously learn from them and am always in awe of their dedication, flair and expertise in their domain. It doesn’t get any better than this to be honest.
